Chia Sien has been with Averis for 15 years! Today, she is a Lead of the Consulting and Robotic Process Automation team, where she’s in charge of streamlining operations in a more cost effective manner. Dive in and read all about Chia Sien’s thrilling ride in Averis.

  1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m someone who’s always on the go and I’m an adventure seeker. I have an advanced PADI diver licence and have been leisurely diving for more than 17 years.
  2. What’s your favourite memory in Averis? Tell us more about it!
One fond memory I have was when the HR Department organised an ‘Out of Office’ Day at Skytreks in Shah Alam, which is now unfortunately closed. My team challenged me to go for the “Extreme Challenge” which is the most difficult course. I almost wanted to give up and opt for the ‘chicken out’ route, but with the support from the team, I managed to finish the full course after more than two hours. I could hardly walk after that and had to sit for more than an hour before I could feel my legs again!
  3. What motivates you to stay at Averis?
My motivation comes from the abundance of opportunities within Averis. I’ve gone through at least five to six different roles in Averis itself. The key is to always remain open minded about the challenges that’s up ahead and stay positive to embrace every challenge/change.
  4. What is the biggest achievement you have made within these years in Averis?
My biggest achievement would be implementing automation within Averis with the support from the IT and Shared Service team members, who didn’t have a specific background in automation to begin with. The purpose of the automation process is to help reduce repetitive and mundane tasks. Most companies who want to get into automation require external consultants to help with the implementation, but in Averis, we managed to implement and sustain the automation till today!
  5. Describe your leadership style and how you “lead” others. Is it different from your male counterparts?
I don’t think I have only one type of leadership style. Different leadership styles will be used when you encounter different situations or scenarios. At times, you may need to be autocratic, democratic, and supportive. I guess the difference from our male counterparts is that women tend to be more sensitive in certain areas and our ability to multi-task is definitely stronger and it might be useful at times.
  6. How do you balance being a mum and a leader at work?
I get a lot of support from the team and my family for me to be able to balance both work and family. There is no magic formula, but don’t doubt yourself when certain decisions are made, as to whether you are sacrificing your family over work. Children are more resilient than you think. Once a decision is made, just go with it. There are also times when family comes first and you just need to trust others to deliver the work so that you can focus on family.
  7. What advice do you have for women looking to grow within the company they work for?
Whether it’s for women or men, the same rule applies. In order to grow, don’t just sit on it and expect returns or rewards. No pain, no gain. Be sure to constantly ask questions by yourself on whatever information that’s been given to you. Challenge the status quo in an objective manner.

Supporting women leaders and encouraging them to shine in every way possible is a culture we practise in Averis. There are plenty of opportunities to learn and grow so if you’re keen to build a strong career, join us! Send over your updated resume to recruitment@averis.biz and our team will be in touch.
