In just one and a half years at Averis, Lim Yu Han has taken on diverse roles –  starting in SAP FICO Support, then on to Strategic Planning, and now contributing his skills and knowledge in the Project Management Office team. He values the collaborative work culture at Averis and credits his supportive colleagues for his ability to adapt in the various teams. Keep scrolling to read more about Yu han and his experience so far.

  1. Hi Yu Han! Tell us 3 interesting facts that not many people know about you.

For one, I’m a big fan of movies, especially those made by some of the notable directors (Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, Katheryn Bigelow).

I also have an appreciation for filmmaking, and often look at behind-the-scenes featurettes to see how they bring a film to life, such as visual effects, stunt work, cinematography, location scouting, scriptwriting, etc.

I also may not be the most active individual, but I do join the occasional badminton or bouldering sessions with my friends during the weekends.

  1. How long have you been in Averis and how has your journey been so far?

I’ve been inAveris for one and a half years. Throughout this period, I have had three rotations; all of which were very different experiences. I could say that each role taught me something new; but a more accurate description would be that each role prompted me to adapt to different dynamics and circumstances.

My journey in Averis began in the SAP FICO Support team, where I learned valuable operational know-how on the system and got to understand the work that was required to keep businesses running smoothly. Support teams are often the unsung heroes of a large company. Without their contributions, there will undoubtedly be a noticeable difference in performance.

I then rotated to a dedicated Strategic Planning Unit and got the opportunity to shadow an Executive Director. The experience was as challenging as it was valuable. Working with management was a change in pace entirely; deliverables were required on a shorter timeline and comprehension of complex initiatives in various industries was necessary. The experience taught me to approach matters from a different perspective. I learned to swiftly identify problems and devise possible solutions.

My current rotation has me in the PMO (Project Management Office) team, and it has been an eye-opening experience so far. My role requires a keen eye for detail, as the PMO team manages the details of incoming and ongoing projects. I’m still relatively new to this role, and although I’m not well-versed in their operations just yet, there’s plenty more to learn. I keep an optimistic view ahead on my journey in this team.

From learning things on the ground as a member of a support team, to looking at things from a top-down perspective alongside management; and subsequently managing incoming projects as part of PMO, I would say my journey had me going through many levels of a corporate landscape. I’m immensely thankful for the opportunities I’ve had, and will continue to appreciate all that is in store for me in the future.

  1. What is your role in Averis and what do you do?

As a Management Associate in the company, I’m rotated two times a year to different teams. This gives me exposure to different departments and the opportunity to learn different skill sets.

Management Associates generally join a team and are expected to pick up on things fast; quickly adding value to the assigned team. Depending on what team I was rotated into, my role changes accordingly. Usually, it starts off with me supporting a colleague while simultaneously learning from a senior in the team. When things pick up and I start to take on more work, I can see that an extra pair of hands in a team makes a lot of difference.

  1. What do you think about the work culture here?

The working culture in Averis is collaborative, and it’s evident within teams. Although teams have their own unique dynamics, projects that require collaboration among departments work out pretty well.

  1. What was your biggest challenge while working here and how did you overcome it?

Without a doubt, the biggest challenge was to adapt to different requirements in different teams. Every team has their own scope and approach in handling things, and that can take some getting used to.

I didn’t hesitate to ask questions on anything I found confusing, and my colleagues often gave me guidance on my tasks when I first started. With the help of supportive colleagues, I was able to get through the initial learning curve.

  1. When you’re feeling down, how do you bring yourself back up?

Putting on some tunes. There’s no mentally bad place that the right playlist won’t get you out of. I highly recommend curating playlists for different moods, and that keeps me going in many situations.

  1. Any words of advice for those who want to start a career in this company? How about those who want to pursue their dream of working overseas?

As for those who would like to work overseas, perhaps it may be a good idea to join a team in Averis which works with clients overseas (i.e. Change Management/PMO). This can provide them some exposure on working with people from differing  backgrounds and working cultures; without the risk of being overwhelmed by other matters, such as adapting to life in a different country or city. Further progression can then be taken step by step. Averis does have business trips to other countries, and that can be suitable for such adventurous individuals.
